Keeping Children Safe at Home

One of our main priorities as parents or guardians is to guarantee the safety of children at home. Our homes should be environments where children can be creative, learn, and feel secure.

Regrettably, due to numerous hazards and potential dangers at home, children under five are more susceptible to injuries at home than in any other location.

To enhance home safety for children, this article will address common household injuries and provide protective measures.

Additionally, a child home safety checklist is included at the end.

Falls

The primary cause of injuries to children at home is falls, often from chairs, beds, stairs, or windows.

To prevent falls, install window limiters within children's reach to prevent accidents. Balusters and railings should be installed on steps, stairs, and decks. For toddlers, a stair gate can provide added safety. Supervise children on trampolines to avoid accidents.

Choking

Choking is a significant risk for children at home due to their tendency to explore and put objects in their mouths. Keep cords and small items that pose choking hazards out of reach.

Burns

Burns are a common household injury for children. Ensure safe water temperatures, supervise children in the kitchen, and keep hot appliances out of reach. Regularly check smoke alarms to prevent fire hazards.

Poisoning

Prevent poisoning by securing toxic items in childproof drawers or keeping them out of reach.

Cuts

To avoid cuts, use safety glazing on windows and sliding doors. Keep sharp utensils locked away and ensure safety measures in the kitchen.

Drownings

Pool safety is crucial; maintain a fence and gate around pools and supervise children near water at all times.
